A short, compact poem written by a young enslaved girl in colonial Boston. This piece has been read in many different ways; here it is presented with context so you can think through its language and tension for yourself.

In this brief but pointed letter, Wheatley responds to a minister who spoke out against slavery and comments on the irony of people who love liberty while denying it to others.
