What is Stanza & Story?
Stanza & Story is a digital literary journal and media project that curates classic poetry and prose. Here, works—often from the public domain—are read aloud, unpacked, and placed back into their historical and cultural context. Instead of dropping texts on a page and walking away, Stanza & Story offers enough background and reflection to help you see who wrote them, when, why, and what they might mean now.
Featured Poem
“On Being Brought from Africa to America” – Phillis Wheatley
A short, compact poem written by a young enslaved girl in colonial Boston. This piece has been read in many different ways; here it is presented with context so you can think through its language and tension for yourself.
Featured Prose
In this brief but pointed letter, Wheatley responds to a minister who spoke out against slavery and comments on the irony of people who love liberty while denying it to others.
